DOT Exam in Hopkins, MN | Certified Medical Examiner
DOT Medical Exams Done Right. No Wait. No Confusion.
If you need a DOT medical exam to maintain your commercial driver's license (CDL) or comply with FMCSA regulations, you need a provider who is efficient, thorough, and certified.
I am Dr. Shawn Halliday, a FMCSA Certified Medical Examiner (National Registry # 9708954762). I offer in-office DOT physical exams in Hopkins, MN, by appointment only.
Whether you are a single driver or a fleet manager needing exams for multiple drivers, I provide the same thorough, no-rush evaluation for every person.
A DOT exam is more than a formality. The purpose is to ensure drivers can safely perform the physical and mental demands of operating a commercial vehicle. FMCSA regulations require periodic medical certification to help protect both drivers and the public. My goal is to make the process straightforward, efficient, and easy to understand while ensuring all federal requirements are met.
What The Exam Includes
Every DOT physical follows FMCSA guidelines and includes:
- Medical history review: Current and past conditions, medications, surgeries
- Vital signs: Blood pressure, pulse, height, weight
- Vision test: Visual acuity, peripheral vision, color recognition
- Hearing test: Whisper test (FMCSA approved)
- Physical examination: Head, neck, heart, lungs, abdomen, spine, extremities, neurological screening
- Urinalysis: Dipstick screening for sugar, protein, blood (kidney function)
- Medical Examiner's Certificate (MEC): Issued on-site if qualified
The exam takes approximately 45 minutes from start to finish. No rushing. No cutting corners.
Many drivers are surprised by how simple the process is when they come prepared. Bringing any required medical documentation ahead of time can help avoid delays and make it easier to receive your certification the same day.

You need your DOT exam. You need it done correctly. And you need the medical card in hand the same day.
I offer:
- Appointment-only scheduling (no waiting rooms full of walk-ins)
- A full 45-minute appointment (not a rushed 10-minute "sign-off")
- Clear communication about any disqualifying findings and next steps
How to book: Call (952) 931-9867 or use the online scheduling link.
Whether this is your first DOT exam or your tenth renewal, I take the time to explain findings and answer questions. My goal is not simply to complete paperwork but to help drivers understand exactly where they stand and what may be needed moving forward.
For Fleet Managers
You have drivers who need DOT exams. You cannot afford downtime, confusion, or last-minute disqualifications.
I offer:
- Batch scheduling: Book multiple drivers back-to-back (one appointment every 30 minutes)
- Same-day Medical Examiner's Certificates: Drivers leave with their card
- Clear documentation: I provide a copy of the long-form for your records
- Direct communication: I notify you of any disqualifications or required follow-ups
To schedule fleet exams: Call (952) 931-9867 or email shawn@redbirdwellness.org.
Fleet scheduling is designed to minimize disruption to your operations. By coordinating exams in advance, drivers can complete their DOT exam requirements efficiently and return to work with minimal downtime.
What Happens If A Driver Does Not Qualify?
Not every driver passes on the first visit. If a driver has a condition that requires monitoring (hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea, etc.), I will:
- Explain exactly why the driver did not qualify
- Provide a written list of requirements to become qualified (e.g., blood pressure log, CPAP compliance, cardiology clearance)
- Re-examine at no additional charge once the requirements are met
No surprise fees. No "come back and pay again." Just a clear path to certification.
In many situations, a temporary disqualification does not mean a driver cannot become certified. Often, it simply means additional documentation or medical management is needed. I will provide clear guidance so you know exactly what steps are required.
