It commonly affects athletes involved in jumping, sprinting, and explosive movements, but can also occur in recreational exercisers whose training volume increases faster than their tissues can adapt.
Patellofemoral pain syndrome refers to pain around or behind the kneecap. Rather than resulting from a single injury, it typically develops when repetitive forces exceed the knee's ability to tolerate them. Running, squatting, climbing stairs, prolonged sitting, or downhill walking are common aggravating activities.
Although these conditions involve different structures, they frequently share similar contributing factors, including repetitive loading, muscle weakness, movement inefficiencies, and reduced control throughout the lower extremity.
Why Knee Injuries Develop
Not every knee injury begins with a dramatic twist or fall.
Many athletic knee injuries develop gradually through repetitive loading. Every jump, landing, sprint, squat, or change of direction places force through the knee. Normally, healthy tissues adapt to those demands. However, when training volume increases too quickly or movement mechanics become inefficient, those tissues may begin to break down faster than they recover.
Athletes often notice symptoms slowly building over weeks or months before they become significant enough to limit performance.
